My Mother Wears Combat Boots |
Description:
AK say “Written with humor, extensive research, and much trial and error, My Mother Wears Combat Boots delivers sound advice for parents of all stripes. Amid stories of bringing kids (and grandparents) to women's rights demonstrations, taking baby on tour with her band, and organizing cooperative childcare, Jessica gives detailed nuts-and-bolts information. A clever, hip, and entertaining mix of advice, anecdotes, political analysis, and factual sidebars that will help parents as they navigate the first years of their child's life. "An instant classic, the latest in the evolution of punk sensibilities into sustainable community action: full of real life experience and well-researched inquiry. It will take another generation before a parenting book has the cutting edge insight, yet stable strength, of this collection." |

Rebellious Spirit |
Description:
Rebellious Spirit, Maria Occhipinti and the Ragusa Anti-Draft Revolt of 1945, Ragusa, Sicily, 1945. Mussolini's fascist regime had fallen apart, with many of his backers turning 'democratic' and hoping to prevent a revolution with the help of the allied armies and Communist Party. After five years of war, their attempts to create a new Italian army are met with evasion and resistance. Maria Occhipinti began the Ragusa anti-draft revolt of January, 1945 by laying down in front of an army truck carrying arrested draftees, who then escaped. A four-day insurrection followed, with the rich dispossessed, until the Italian army was able to retake the city. Maria Occhipinti served nearly two years' prison for her part in the revolt. Afterwards, she travelled endlessly, seeking her own freedom – and a free world. |

Real Utopia |
Description:
Ak Say; Instead of simply declaring "another world is possible," the writers in this collection engage with what that world would look like, how it would function, and how our commitment to just outcomes is related to the sort of institutions we maintain. Topics include: participatory economics, political vision, education, architecture, artists in a free society, work after capitalism, and poly-culturalism. The catch-all phrase here is "participatory society"—one that is directly democratic and seeks institutional solutions to complex sociological and economic questions. |
